During my time in New York I shot a model reel in Chelsea. I was thrilled when I saw the results because David is one of my favorite videographers. His work is always fantastic. It really captured that essence of city life and being one person in a huge city. It also captured this aesthetic of a 20’s something longing adventure and love while in the midst of everything around her.
This reel was a lot of fun to make, but it was also personal and close to home for me. As a model, often times, people forget how you got there in the first place. Modeling is about what makes you unique, it’s not about all the “glamour” and extraness. Being a model is about being your true authentic self and letting your natural state speak for itself. Whether you’re a blank canvas for a makeup or hair campaign, or you’re a hanger for the clothes you’re selling, being you is what will sell and will capture people’s attention. The product will not and cannot sell itself.
Aside from the physical, there is a level of artistry that comes with modeling. Being able to convey a feeling is utmost important when it comes to this field and you must be able to show that in your face. Often times you can have the most serious face but your eyes will tell a story. This artistic side to modeling is often overlooked and it’s one of the most important factors.
This model reel created by David really showed the simplicity of a person while still displaying a huge sense of emotions. He is always spot on when creating these reels. I’m glad he was able to express the idea that models are more than just a face, and that there is a lot of expression and work that goes into it. At the end of the day, it is an art.
