For some time now, silk slip dresses have been in. The question isn’t whether to wear them out, but how to wear them out. It can get tricky and look like you’re going to bed if you’re not careful, and you don’t want that to happen. When pairing a silk slip dress always ask yourself, “what look am I going for?” You always want to make sure it’s paired with the right pieces, but before you do so, you must decide what look you’re going for.
When it comes to me pairing my slip dresses, I always opt for a more elevated chic look. I find that pairing it with leather boots or a slim heel always does the trick. However, if you’re going for a boot look, you should look to pair it will a jacket, otherwise, it’ll look too bare. When in doubt, leather boots and a leather jacket always do the trick.
I made the mistake of owning a short slip dress with a lace trim. It definitely looked like a bedtime look. I paired it with red lipstick, black Doc’s, and a leather jacket. If I was to do that look again, I would wear a black t-shirt underneath to lessen the bedtime look and make it look a little more casual chic. It was too revealing for my taste.
In the fall/winter months, I wear silk dresses with fitted turtlenecks, and those are also a fave. It really plays up the look of the dress and allows you to wear it year round. I think when it comes to pairing according to the seasons, it’s important to also determine if the silk dress is a spring/summer dress, a fall/winter, or year round look.
I wore the look above to my marathon pre-party when it was chilling cold earlier this year. It’s the perfect example of a Winter/Spring dress. I went for a casual chic look since we were being celebrated, and the reason we were celebrating was a big deal, but it was still in a casual spot so I chose to dress it down, while meanwhile also opting for comfort.
Most of my silk dresses, I can only wear for two seasons and then I have to wait until the following year, unless I’m somewhere tropical, like Miami. Other times, if I’m in New York, I can wear certain dresses in the Winter and Spring, depending on the colors. In New York I get away with wearing things more due to the fact that we all wear black year round. And in Miami, most things fly due to the hot weather. It truly all depends on location and weather.
Another great look is a silk dress paired with a white sneaker or a cowboy boot. For the sneaker, I personally prefer a low top or espadrille. If you’re going for a boot, something fun, color or pattern-wise always works. Feel free to throw on a denim jacket to make the look come full circle, and don’t be afraid to have fun with it.
Lastly, accessorize. Accessories make a look really stand out and adds the finishing touches. Always add a bag of some sort that won’t take away from the dress, and that will compliment it. It should always match your shoes, or be in the same shade as the look you’re going for.
Jewelry will really compliment the look too. Whether it’s a simple necklace, or an earring stack; make sure to add a little something. I tend to opt for dainty jewelry that won’t take away since I already wear a full ear stack; that’s as much layering as l mix for with my jewelry.
I hope this helps, and I can’t wait to hear about your outfits. Feel free to share how you will be pairing your silk dress, or better yet, tell us your favorite ways to style it!
xx,
Keren Nicole
